SUPPORT FOR EDUCATION

WE BELIEVE THAT EVERY CHILD HAS THE RIGHT TO AN EDUCATION

But many Kenyan children don’t have access to an education. Even though primary school is free in the country, more than 1.2 million children are out of school at any given year. Most of the country’s public schools are underfunded and lack the necessary materials needed to provide quality or any kind of education.

The cost of most fees, mandatory uniforms, and school supplies falls on parents, some of whom can’t afford the basic necessities. Hence, it’s common to find children out of school for lack of basic school necessities like pens which cost as little as fifty cents.

Pamoja believes every child deserves a chance to obtain an education because an educated child has the potential to uplift their life, that of the family and community. We support children living in extreme poverty stay in school through provision of back to school supplies, tuition and fees.

BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Since 2013, Pamoja has distributed thousands of back packs, books, pens, geometry sets, and other supplies to children at Gakurwe Primary School in Central Kenya. This has resulted in reduced school dropout rates and an overall improvement in students’ performance.

SECONDARY SCHOOL TUITION AND FEES

Every year, thousands of Kenyan primary school children are unable to attend secondary school due to lack of tuition. Although the government provides some assistance, the parents’ expense together with added fees and school supplies is too much for many impoverished families who can barely afford food. This leaves many bright and hardworking children in limbo.

Pamoja recognizes that one of the most effective long-term solutions out of poverty for young people is through education. Our education support includes four years of tuition, fees, and supplies to bright and hardworking students whose parents can’t afford to pay fees because of poverty. Our goal is to give them an opportunity to finish school, thereby creating a path for better life opportunities.

COMPUTER LITERACY AND READING PROGRAM

In the past few years, Pamoja has provided basic computer skills to many children and youth in Gakurwe village and the surrounding areas. Some of the older youth who have trained through this program have used the skills as a stepping stone to better opportunities in the city.

Computer literacy has become a necessity in today’s technology driven society. It enhances learning, and opens the door to new opportunities. Sadly, many children in most Kenyan schools have no access to computers or computer training.

Pamoja is also dedicated to improving literacy in the village. We are in the process of equipping a library with books and computers at the local school where kids can learn computer skills and read some of their favorite books.

FOOD BASKETS DISTRIBUTION

Our Food basket Program distributes food packages to families experiencing extreme poverty in Gakurwe village. But our core focus is bi-weekly food baskets distribution to families taking care of orphans and vulnerable children in Kayole-Kamulu neighborhood in Eastern Nairobi, home to thousands of the city’s poorest residents. Since 2013, we have fed thousands of families through this program.

Every day, millions of Kenyan families go to bed hungry. With poverty rates nearing 50%, the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research estimates that a third of the population lacks enough money or resources to ensure they can eat. The problem is dire among impoverished communities in rural and urban areas of the country where lack of job opportunities, drought, crop failure, poor harvests, as well as the impact of HIV/AIDS have left many people destitute.
